do plants need solar radiation and uv rays??

hi,

i'm looking at buying a greenhouse..they manufacturer states that the clear single layer polycarbonate panels block out 99.9% solar radiation and 100% 'harmful' uv rays...now if i were using the panels on say a conservatory that would be great for me and my skin, but do plants benefit from being 'protected' from these sunbeams?.or are they needed for the plants to make 'good produce' full of nutrients for me to eat??...thankyou...this is what i was looking at http://www.psp.co.nz/Products/Horticultural-Supplies/Suntuf-Hobby-Greenh...

Greenhouse Glass

Does anyone out there know where we can buy used greenhouse glass? We need approx. 1500 panes 18"x20". We live in north Yuba County, CA. Maybe a commercial greenhouse is being torn down somewhere?

Greenhouse Retrofit Question

Hello - We have a 20+ year old Four Seasons greenhouse attached to our home (a decent photo attached). We love it very much but it looks quite rough from the outside - the seals in nearly every one of the glass windows has broken, meaning severe condensation and in some cases even water standing between the panes. The half circle panes are old plexi or acrylic and are yellowed and cracking.

The structure itself is in excellent shape. The problem is that when I had the Four Seasons representative out to look at replacing the glass they quoted nearly $30,000!! I couldn't believe it. .

UV Panels ... how to find up side ?

Having lost identification marker for proper side on UV panels , how do I tell which side of the UV panel has uv coating ?
I am assuming the UV side is the "up" side ?

Removable Panels?

At the risk of sounding silly, I have a unique design question...

Has anyone heard of/tried a gh design that allows for transparent "panels" that could be added or removed as the seasons change? I'm talking about basically a frame with a permanent angled south-facing wall (obviously, clear). Then "side" and "roof" panels constructed of lightweight frame material and greenhouse film. These panels get attached to the frame in some tight/airtight fashion when conditions warrant it.

Solexx or Polycarbonate?

I'm considering a DIY greenhouse for my backyard. I'm planning on framing it out with cedar or redwood and covering it with either Solexx or polycarbonate. I was just wondering what the difference was between the two and if there was any particular benefit of one over the other? Thanks.
