automatic shutters ???
I am using a large exhaust fan which I recently installed on my greenhouse. It is plenty big for the size of the greenhouse. Not sure of the CFM--I bought it used from a large operation that went belly up. I ordered the Heating/Cooling Thermostat from IGC. It is working great. Now I need to create an intake which can open and close based on temperature. I am thinking about ordering a J&D Aluminum Shutter from IGC; but I don't know how to control it. It says it needs a controller but all I have is the thermostat hooked to the fan.
What can I use to control the motorized shutter, other than an expensive greenhouse controller? Is there a simple thermostat which would open and close the shutter based on temperature? I would set it a few degrees lower than the temperture set on the exhaust fan, so it would be open before the fan kicks in.
The large fan creates a lot of negative pressure within the greenhouse. Could I use a non-motorized shutter and would it get pulled open by the negative pressure when the fan kicks on?
Thanks!
J
OK, I see what you are getting at. So the intake vent opens and closes by way of the current being on or off. So all I need to control the intake vent is another thermostat; and wire it into the motor which opens and closes the louvers. So when the thermostat trips at high temp, then the vent opens--and it stays open as long as it recieves power (ie as long as the thermostat is "on.") Is that correct?
If this is correct, I have some follow up questions:
How many amps does the vent opener motor pull as it is holding the vent open? I figured you needed some type of controller to send it an "open" or "close" command. But now I see it is more like "on" or "off" just like the fan. Doesn't this waste energy?
Also, I noticed that on the Commercial Inlet Shutters you can order them for either 230 or 115. What does the J&D Aluminum shutter w/ motor kit run on? Is it 110?
A couple of questions. Most 2-Stage thermostats I know of are 2-stage on the heating side and one stage on the fan side. A standard thermostat will work. Use the fan signal to open the shutters and the cool signal to run the fan. Reason, if you are in the GH and there is much wind (as there often is in OK) all you may have to do is open the shutters. Depending on how air tight your GH is you could drive the shutters and fan from the same thermostat. The possable problem here is if the fan is strong enough to keep the shutters from opening. From watching my system I realy don't think that will happen, the shutters don't seal that well.
I am think of doing this in my GH and using the other t-stat for a backup heater.
The other question is, standard t-stats run on 24 VAC. The motor for the fan and shutters uses 115 or 220 VAC. Won't you have to use a relay? the t-stat drives the relay and the relay drives the fan/shutters.
They sell those 24 VAC thermostats at Home Depot--its the only kind they have. But I don't know how to wire those low voltage DC units. The thermostat I have is this one. You simply wire the hot (black) wire thru the thermostat and it turns the fan on and off based on temperature. I love it.
Now I want to rig up a similar system for a louvered intake vent with a motor for opening and closing (no fan); but I can't get a clear answer on how to wire it.
I am thinking of trying this product to avoid all this hassle; and save power. However, I don't know if this vent is high quality and if it is reliable. Also, I'm not sure if it will work on a homemade greenhouse or if it is designed to only work on Solexx greenhouses. Has anyone tried the Solexx Easy Flow Louver Vent and Solar Opener ? Can anyone recommend another product which will solve my problem ?
I found this document which gives a pretty good explanation of how to wire the intake shutters.
But what about the hydrolic opener? Anyone used this product?
That t-stat looks very much like mine. Mine is a mechinacle (sp?) contact that can handel ac or dc up to 120 V 10 A I think going on memory about the current. It has a set of normally open and normmaly closed contacts so it can be used for heating or cooling. You should be able to use the same switched power to drive your louvers. HOWEVER, if you are not 100% confertable working with 120 V power get an electrian. The wiring needs to be water proof. Let me say again, if you are not compleately confident about working with 120 V power get an electrian.
Here's the wiring diagragm for the 2-stage we sell. The exhaust fans and shutters are both wired into this thermostat, so you only need one.
Thanks. I decided to go with a motorized shutter, that hydrolic one seems a little flimsy. The wiring seems pretty straightforward, now that I understand how the shutter motor operates.
What exactly are automatic shutters? Are they exterior shutters? I've never heard of them before, so this thread has sparked my interest.

Look into a 2-stage thermostat. The fan and the shutter both wire into the thermostat, you set the temperature, and one stage operates just prior to the second stage. It's designed for fans and shutters.
