How do I install 6mil polyethylene greenhouse film, also known as 4-year greenhouse film?
Poly film is a very common covering for cold frames and do-it-yourself structures of all types. The following points address some common questions in regards to the film:
- The film is generally installed as one continuous sheet, meaning if your building has a coverage requirement of 32' x 55' then a single piece of film sized to those dimensions will be what we recommend to cover your building. We do not generally recommend trying to seam, overlap, or otherwise use multiple pieces where one could be used.
- A single layer of the clear film has a light transmission of about 92%, going down to about 80% for a dual layer.
- For regular 4-yr film, it does not matter what side of the film faces out. It is infused with UV inhibotors. However, for Thermal AC film the correct side will need to face in the proper direction.
- In instances where you would like 2 layers of film (for added insulation and durability), a "tube" can be purchased at up to 26' width. Any larger than this and two seperate, single sheets must be purchased and stretched over the top of each other.
- When installing to one of our Cold Frame structures or installing a double layer, our recommended attachment method is aluminum base and clip. Using spring base and clip is also acceptable. It is not recommended to use batten tape for a dual layer, although it is an inexpensive and effective way to fasten a single layer to the recommended wood perimeter foundation. For reference, batten tape is non-adhesive and is commonly attached via staples, nails, or screws.
- Attaching the film to the gable or rounded ends and/or using the film as and endwall covering may require special pieces of aluminum base and clip that can accomodate this application.
- If you are installing poly film to either a tubular steel building or a DIY PVC building, it is possible to use snap clamps and grip clamps to attach the film, provided you know the correct size clamp you will need.
